Apple Sauce – A Holiday Tradition

November 5, 2019

I cannot believe how quickly November rolled in. Just when I thought I could take a breather after finishing up my landscape design project, I was reminded that in just a few short weeks Thanksgiving will be here.

If you are like me, one of the things that stresses me out more than I hate to admit is having a long list of things to do and very little time to get it all done.

And so, to make sure that the holidays are a fun time not just for the family and friends who will gather around my table, I get as much as I can done as early as I can.

One of my family traditions for the holiday table is Homemade Applesauce. Shortly after the final harvest of apples I take an afternoon to “put up” or can jars of applesauce and whole cranberry sauce. That way, once the holiday dinner arrives, I need only to pull from the canning shelf or refrigerator and add it to the dinner line up. In this edition, I am sharing my fail-safe Homemade Apple Sauce. It is quick, easy and oh so yummy. For those of you who have not purchased my cookbook yet, Farm Girl in The City – Of Food and Love, be sure to pick one up as a gift to yourself or someone you love. The recipe for the Whole Cranberry Sauce can be found there.

So head over to the market and let’s make applesauce.

Because life should be good. How good is that…

Ingredients

10 Honey Crisp Apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks

6 Granny Smith Apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks

3/4 cup Apple Cider

1/2 cup Organic Sugar (optional)

1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon

Pinch Sea Salt

Instructions

Add all ingredients to a large pot. Bring to a slight boil. Simmer until just tender. Add to food processor and blend to desired consistency.

Add to hot sterilized jars. Tighten lids and invert jars to release air until cooled. Store until ready to use.
