Respites
Old Angler’s Inn — Potomac, Maryland
Sometimes the best respite is to spend an enjoyable evening in the company of good friends. This month’s respite will recount and share with you such an evening spent in early October.
It seems with both our busy schedules, stealing away for a long evening has become a luxury that we can seldom afford.
Over the years, Jim, Jackie and their daughter Jessica have shared Christmas dinners with us in our home. We have seen our children grow from sweet little girls into beautiful young women. And so, recently, we decided to celebrate this new chapter in our lives by exploring some of the wonderful restaurants and other interesting places in the DC area.
We chose a lovely restaurant nestled in the woods of Potomac Maryland. It is one of those places that if you were not aware of its existence, you would never know it was there. Old Angler’s Inn has a long history and has been a favorite of people in the Washington DC area for over 50 years.
Several years ago, the restaurant fell on hard times due an aging and eventually passing owner. Back in 2008 new owners, Mark and Sara Reges, acquired the restaurant and I am pleased to report, Old Angler’s Inn is back, and what a lovely return.
We spent an evening at the restaurant in early October, just as the weather was beginning to change. It was a cool evening, but we opted to sit outdoors on the patio which was heated very nicely with patio heaters. The atmosphere was relaxed and throughout the evening diners from the nearby neighborhood wandered in to enjoy good food and the crisp autumn air.
We began our dining experience with a wonderful glass of champagne and an appetizer of seared scallops on a bed of ratatouille. Compliments of the chef, the scallops were prepared to perfection. Jackie’s thoughts were that the scallops were “well-seasoned, moist and succulent.”
Jackie’s dinner consisted of rock fish with a vegetable ratatouille and she finished with a raspberry sorbet and fresh berries. Her over review: “very good food with the exception of the bread which she found a little boring and the service, very attentive but not hovering.”
Jim had an appetizer of crab cake on a bed of seaweed which he thoroughly enjoyed. His comments — “the crab was adequate with no detection of filler”. His dined on Muscovy Duck as a recommendation from our waiter with a side of ratatouille and potato cake, and Jim’s thought was the recommendation was “spot-on”. For dessert he had the tiramisu.
I especially enjoyed the crab, avocado and grapefruit salad which had a nice splash of chive vinaigrette — perfect. The crabmeat was fresh and the avocado was just right.
My husband absolutely loved his dinner of lamb chops and garlic mashed potatoes. He finished with crème brulee.
Old Angler’s Inn will offer a special $45 per person menu for Thanksgiving dinner. For details, on the menu and other information, be sure to visit their website at: www.oldanglersinn.com. Reservations are required.
