Spring: Renewal of the Temple
Patrice Jones, contributing editor
During the winter and fall months, some of us become a little content with neglecting our workouts. We want to be indoors, where it’s warm and cozy. “Comfort foods’ become our best friend and the mere thought of running or walking outdoors in frigid temperatures sounds about as tempting as walking barefoot on hot coal. Our temples begin to feel the neglect of our workouts and bad eating habits. Mood changes, weight gain and muscle aches and pains are just a few challenges that derive from this seasonal lack of motivation to get moving.
Now that winter is over and spring has sprung upon us, its time to experience a rebirth of motivation and a rejuvenation of our bodies. During spring, the plants, flowers and trees of the earth bloom. Things once thought to be without life, go through a rebirth and process of beautification. Just as the colors of a spring flower get brighter and its roots stronger, take this time to reshape and rebirth your temple. I know what you’re thinking. You made this SAME commitment to yourself during the start of the New Year, but something happened and you fell off. It’s time to REFOCUS and RE-COMMIT because you’re worth EVERY ounce of effort it takes!
Not sure where to start? Here are a few tips to help you ‘Spring into Fitness’:
Seasonal Gym Specials:
Every gym has holiday and seasonal specials to encourage new memberships. Do an internet search to find a gym convenient to your home or workplace. It’s sometimes beneficial to get a list of gym 1-800 numbers and call to inquire about specials from a corporate level. There are also websites that provide downloadable coupons and list specials. In order to make the best decision, be sure to do a walk-through of each facility and visit more than one.
Outdoor Workouts:
Blaze the trails of your neighborhood with a brisk walk or jog. Find a nearby park or high school track. If you’d rather go bike-riding, grab your bike and include the family wherever possible. Remember to stretch and keep everyone hydrated. In addition, you can take your gym bag to work and go for a lunchtime jog/walk.
Run or Walk for a Cause:
Find a local walk or race for a cause and get registered. Choose a cause true, dear and personal to you; it will surely boost your motivation before and during the event. Most organized runs/races will have training programs available for those participants that may require help getting ready for race day. It may be helpful to familiarize yourself with ‘distance-lingo’ before you get started: 5K = 3.1 miles, 8K = 4.97 miles, 10K = 6.1 miles, Half-Marathon = 13.1 miles and a Full-Marathon = 26.2 miles.
Caring for our temples is a task that should be tackled ALL year round. The beautiful weather and vibrant colors of spring are just an added plus to help us get motivated and inspired. Rejuvenate, rebirth and refocus; your temple needs you!
