Garden Plot

It is fall and that means it is time to feed your garden soil with all of those wonderful nutrients that can be found right in your own backyard. To a future or existing garden plot, fallen leaves are gold!

There are so many ways to collect these treasures beginning with some of the wonderful mulching equipment on the market or even using the bagging feature on your lawn mower works just as well by simply placing the setting on mulch. I especially like this feature as it helps the leaves to decompose faster over the long winter months.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. If you are raking up the leaves, fill your garden area with as as much as your garden will hold and soak the leaves in order to weigh them down. If you have been having rain, this step is not necessary.
  2. Turn over the soil in the garden; mixing the leaves into the soil.
  3. You can also cover the area with a tarp to help heat up the ground which will result in the decomposition happening at a faster pace. If you are planning to do this, remember the leaves and soil must be wet.
  4. After a couple of weeks and before the ground freezes, turn over the soil once again. Recover with the tarp.
  5. Come spring you will be amazed at the rich black soil and your vegetables are going to just love you.

Until next time, Happy Gardening...
