The Joy of a Girl’s Night-In

Several years ago my sister and her family spent Thanksgiving with my family and it was for certain one I will never forget. After a day of hitting the stores on Black Friday we decided that a girl’s night in would be the perfect ending to a very long day. And so we pulled out the facial mask, nail polish, music and bought along open minds for hours of squealing laughter and beauty. Although this was several years ago when our daughters were teens, we still laugh about the rich and funny conversations we had on that cold November eve.

And so this year, during what has become our annual pilgrimage to the homestead, we decided to do an encore in order to try and recapture some of the special moments of a time gone by. It proved to be very interesting for girl talk as what were then starry-eyed teen girls are now young women and in some instances they now have girls of their own. The conversation was rich and the new memories made were absolute treasures, and at the end of the evening it was as though our first party never ended. That is what I love about women connecting with other women, whether it be family or friends, the sweetness of the encounter just lingers on and on...

So, how can you create your special girls night in over the Christmas holidays? Here are some ideas to help you get started. And, please remember to check the attitude at the door! Enjoy!

  1. Choose a theme and build around it.
  2. Establish ground rules for good conversation...negative stuff not invited
  3. Share stories of “back in the day”
  4. Share something that the “younguns” would never guess you experienced when you were their age
  5. Whip up home-made masks to give each other facials
  6. Share music from both generations and DANCE, DANCE, DANCE
  7. Build a scrap-book and add to it each year as an annual tradition
  8. Eat something decadent; chocolate always works
  9. Make up your own story with each person adding their own line to the story
  10. Set the date and time for next year’s event
