Salad greens can be grown even in the heat of summer if you move them out of the line of fire. And the fire I speak about is the blazing, blistering sun which can wreak havoc on tender salad leaves. You can keep the salad greens coming all summer just by moving your greens offsite to an area that gets only early morning sun.
Another good way to accomplish this is to pick up or build one of the popular portable raised garden beds. If you have a handy person around the house, they are easy to build. Or if you are not handy or simply don’t have the time or money, you can also improvise by finding a discarded mattress with a wooden frame. By removing all of the filling down to the boards, what will remain is a perfect garden structure for your garden.
Place the frame in an area that is level and drive garden stakes in each corner both on the inside and outside of the corners. This will help to stabilize the box and prevent shifting. Fill this with garden soil and there you have it.
Not only are you recycling but you are saving on time and work. Sow lettuce and mesclun greens in the soil or any other cool weather vegetable and water often. Remember a little sun, lots of shade and your salads will love you.
Until next time, happy gardening!
