Good Projects
December and early January usually mean hunkering down indoors to keep warm from the cold outdoors. And although it might be nice and warm inside, there is still a lot of good fun and useful things that one can do in the brisk outdoors.
If you live in an area where there is a lot of snow this time of year, it is a perfect time to talk a nice long walk in a nearby park. It is interesting what you will see when everything is dormant and tucked away for the winter.
And while on your walk why not plan a scavenger hunt with your kids. To make it more interesting make a list of items to look forward and make it a game to see how many of those items you can find.
Here are some things to keep in mind as you make you way to the cold outdoors:
- Be sure to keep your walk to a reasonable time limit to avoid over-exposure to the cold.
- Dress warmly making sure to cover your head feet and hands to reduce heat loss.
- Take along a basket to collect your items.
- Take along a camera to take photos and share your adventure will other family members.
- Be care to visit parks with which you are familiar to avoid accidentally falling into lakes, streams or ponds. It is also a good idea to walk during daylight hours.
- Take along a cell phone just in case you run into trouble and need to reach out to someone at home.
- Let another family member know where you will be walking and when you will return.
- Use this as a time to listen to your child and their thoughts about varying subjects. And listen too, to the sounds of winter. You will be amazed at the sounds that normally go unnoticed when you are silent.
- Upon your return home, spend the evening sharing your experience with other family members.
- Enjoy!
Blessings to you and those you are fortunate enough to call your family and friends!
