The onset of cool weather does not mean an end to getting your kid’s hands in the dirt necessarily. Now is the perfect time to start cool weather vegetables such as salad greens in your fall garden.
Now that the sun is burning a little cooler, you can now switch your salad greens from the shady side of the yard back into the area of the yard that receives full sun.
Here are few tips to help you and your kids with planting a cool weather garden before the cold weather sets in.
- As in the spring, be sure to turn over the soil to prepare the ground for planting.
- Add leaf mulch, which is pure organic fertilizer to the soil.
- Sow seeds that will germinate and produce within 45-60 days.
- Choose a variety of salad greens for a nice selection come harvest time.
- Laminate the seed packets and staple to a small garden marker for easy identification of what was planted.
- If you live in an area where frost happens early, use plastic sheeting to build a raised covering to protect the tender seedlings.
