I am a middle school student that has to catch a 7:55am bus in the morning so I don’t have to tell you with homework and my after school activities I sometimes like to sleep till the last minute. This is part of the new semester and is a huge CHANGE from summer relaxing vacation mode I have been in for the last 2 months. Some mornings I don’t have time to eat a simple bowl of cold cereal; however I still am very hungry in the morning and need something I can throw in my bag on the mornings I’m in a hurry. I am bringing to the kids as well as adults some options that are healthy and pretty tasty, I don’t recommend these things everyday but in a crunch they are great. I tried to find the lowest sodium items that pack the most flavor and fiber. Here are some all from Targets and Wal-Mart. Applesauce in squeeze bottles comes in all flavors. Individual Greek yogurt in vanilla almond and very berry. Trail mix, individual granola in many flavors such as cashew apricot, small packets of peanut butter that also come in variety of flavors such as chocolate peanut butter, honey peanut butter etc, Annie’s organic granola bars, raisons, Honest kids drinks half the sugar and calories of the Capri suns. And don’t forget a boiled egg or just a simple piece of fruit is better than nothing.
LUNCH I found an item called “Picnic on the Go” comes in a few varieties; I like the hummus and crackers that comes with a package of edamame, multi grain crackers and a small square of dark chocolate. Not bad if you don’t have time to pack a lunch. My brother likes the peanut butter and cracker version. Also you can get a tuna set that includes crackers, fruit cup, spoon and napkin. I know that sometimes kids get home before their parents and the healthy choice fresh mixers aren’t bad to pop in the microwave every now and then. Also carrots are now sold in individual packages in the vegetable aisle, walnuts and almonds, peanuts, dark almonds all 100 calorie bags. Also the baby carrots and hummus set is pretty tasty in a pinch.
Remember I don’t want you guys to forgo eating a hot breakfast or taking the time to prepare a nutritious lunch that is still the best way to go but please don’t go to school hungry. If your day is like mines we need to eat to learn and have plenty of energy.
I am going to debut these items and more on 9/20/11 Tues btw (9-10am) on wfaa Good Morning Texas.
