Storing Seeds

September is the perfect time to harvest seeds for your spring and summer garden next year! Not only will you cut down on the cost of purchasing new seeds next spring, but you will also have full knowledge of the quality of the vegetables produced by the seeds first hand. Here are a few good tips to help with storing away your seeds for next year’s garden.

  1. Select seeds from vegetables that are fully mature; under-ripe or under-developed seeds will generally not produce a good fruit.
  2. Remove the seeds using a spoon and spread out on news or brown paper and allow to air dry. I usually dry out my seeds in the morning sun.
  3. Purchase and label pouch envelopes that are readily available at craft stores to identify each seed and variety (i.e. heirloom, etc) and date.
  4. Place seeds in a cool area until next spring.

How good is that...
