You have finally chosen the color palette for your family room makeover and now it is time to put that luscious color on the walls. Of course, before you begin there are a few things you need to do in order to make sure you get the absolute best results. Although this might appear to be a lot of work, trust me, it will pay you in the end with years of enjoyment for you and your family.

So, here goes:

  1. Remove all loose dust from wall surfaces and ceiling and follow up with wiping down the walls with a wet sponge or cloth that has been dipped in a solution of warm water and white vinegar. This will prep the walls and help the paint to adhere and last for years to come. Allow to dry.
  2. Repair any holes or knicks using a wall-repair putty. This can be found easily at any DIY home center. If you need advice, ask questions from someone who works in the paint department of the store.
  3. Remove all outlet covers and picture hangers from walls. Store in zip lock bag until ready to use again.
  4. Protect floors and furniture that can’t be removed from the room, by covering with heavy-duty plastic or fabric drop cloths. Be sure to invest in good drop cloths as cheap ones can cost you in the long run by having furniture ruined if paint soaks through.
  5. Begin by painting ceilings first. Then follow with framing all walls, by painting corners and areas close to ceiling and moldings with a paint brush using the color chosen for walls.
  6. End by painting remaining wall surface with a paint roller being careful to use slow even motions.
  7. Allow paint to dry completely before adding a second coat (if needed).
  8. Tips: Paint and primer now comes in one easy formula. This can save time and money so check out the brands that now offer this type of paint product. For a dramatic effect, paint walls and ceilings the same color. If using a dark color, choose a lighter hue or shade to avoid that closed in feeling.
  9. Replace all fixtures and furniture.

Next month we will take a look at window treatments. Until next time...
