Ma Margaret’s House
In my line of work I am often given the opportunity to visit some amazing places. So you can imagine that after a while it becomes almost mundane trying to find the jewels among all that is available in my travels. And so when a friend of mine sent me a link to a country inn recently, my first thought was, okay, so what. When I did a little research however, I immediately understood why Negletha Johnson, who I might mention is very well traveled, thought this place was a place for me.
Ma Magaret’s located in the tiny village of Reedville, Virginia is a gem of a rare kind. Situated in what my husband referred to as the middle of nowhere, but in reality is in the middle of God’s country, this country inn is for sure reminiscent of a visit to your grandma’s house, but with all the modern conveniences.
The drive from the Washington, DC area is a wonderful 2 hour journey and full of country scenery of country estates, asparagus and strawberry farms. There are also a couple of very nice Virginia wineries along the way should you wish to stop off for a quick tour.
When we arrived at Ma Magaret’s, we were greeted by one of Ma Margarete’s grand daughters who graciously welcomed us into the beautiful home. I was immediately impressed by the warmth of the dwelling and although it was completely restored with many modern touches, the essence of the legacy of the structure was in no way lost. There were wonderful reminders of the grandmother and grandfather throughout the inn. One of the other granddaughters, who had overseen the restoration and decorating of the home had taken great care to carefully appoint each area of the home with pieces that were taken from the original home.
One noteworthy area is the original chimney that had been used to vent a wood stove was meticulously restored and now divides the parlor and formal dining room.
Each room of the home is complete with every modern convenience including separate thermostats and ceiling fans to circulate that wonderful country breeze. Each room also has its own private bath with the exception of the smallest room in the house which is typically used by families who are traveling with children who use a bath conveniently located just outside the room in the hallway.
My husband and I spent our evening in Ma Magaret’s room that was located in the front of the house on the 2nd floor. Immediately outside this bedroom is a lovely balcony with chairs for sitting and taking in a quiet country morning. The bed was extremely comfortable and our sleep was sweet. I should mention too that this room also has a small sitting area and like all of their rooms, is equipped with a flat screen television. Free wireless internet service is also available to guests.
The following morning we were presented with a breakfast that only a grandmother could make. Since we are not pork eaters, we were given the option of turkey bacon and turkey sausage and to that they included fluffy buttermilk biscuits, fresh fruit salad, perfectly scrambled eggs, country potatoes and orange juice. And for my coffee, almond milk!
There is so much more to discover about this jewel of a place and so rather than spoil it with more details, you are going to have to make a visit there on your own.
And on your way home, be sure to stop off at one of the local farms to bring home some of the wonderful bounty. And if you hurry, you can still enjoy some of the best asparagus you will ever taste.
