Garden Plot
Vibrant Retreat
August is the time of year when vegetable gardens are at their peak but it also means that the vibrancy of the warm spring and summer months is also beginning to make its annual retreat. For those of us who desire to hold on the every ounce of summer there are things you can do to elongate the summer right up to the first of the winter’s frost. Try some of these tips to keep your garden alive.
Here is a list of some of the squash you may want to consider for your garden plot:
- Add large planters in the center and borders of your garden with late bloomers that are still available at your local garden center.
- Cut back or prune dead vines and weeds from the area.
- Purchase evergreen shrubs such as boxwoods and plant in the ground as starters for landscaping projects for next year. These plants will thrive in the nutrients that are now present in the ground and add life to the area.
- Clean out bird baths and keep fresh water to attract birds to the area.
- Add other sculpture-like pieces as a way of bringing other elements into the space.
