Choices by Example
Making the right choices is a matter of learning and leading by example. Parents can teach good and healthy living by given verbal instruction, but living it is by far the most effective way to help children to adopt it as a lifestyle.
From playing soccer in the park to a good game of hoops, for parents and children, activities are the most effective road to getting and staying in good physical health.
Here are a few tips to help get you on track.
- Do not turn your fit time into a production. Instead of taking on the role of preacher, become a partner.
- Approach your activity with a matter of fact attitude.
- Pay attention and observe what types of activities your child enjoys and include his or her choices. Remember, the goal is to keep them active.
- Invite one of your child’s friends and his or her parent to join in the activity.
- Set aside one day of the week that belongs to the two of you and you alone. If you have more than one child, consider spending one on one time with each separately in order to make it special.
- Take advantage of this time to listen to what might be going on in other areas of your child’s life. The key is to LISTEN!
- Have fun!
