Harvest a Good Book

One of the most rewarding moments you can spend with a child is perhaps reading one of their favorite books. There is no substitute for the time that reading allows you to bond and communicate in a way that says to a child, spending time with you is important.

Reading allows you to take your children to far- away places and on exciting adventures and the good news is, you never have to leave the room.

Children love story time and reading to them not only allows you to spend quality time with them, but it helps to develop good communication skills and in the development of their vocabulary.

Reading to your child is inexpensive, requiring only time and a comfy chair to kick back and enjoy an adventure to wherever you wish to travel. Here are just a few tips to help you get the most out of this experience.

  1. Choose books that tell good stories. Text books should be reserved for study time.
  2. Take your child to the library and allow them to help choose the books they would like to read.
  3. Begin reading to your child early. A three month old, can enjoy story time as the sound of your voice is soothing to them.
  4. Begin to build a library of printed books for your child. There are many cute tools out there for children, such as electronic reading devices, however, there is no substitute for the real deal. Reading devices are great for teaching your child about the latest electronic tools, but books, where turning pages become as important as the reading itself, are still your best bet.
  5. Take turns by reading a page and allowing your child to read a page; making the experience interactive.
  6. Make a gift of books for each special occasion, such as birthdays, holidays and occasionally, just because.
  7. Set aside time to read to your child, if not each day, at least three times per week.
  8. Have a conversation about why a particular story is their favorite.

Happy Reading...
